4 Keys to Getting Started Online

Have you ever wondered why most people never get their businesses off the ground and into profit? You see them on Facebook and the Forums for years, yet they’re not making any money. They’re spinning their wheels. They’re completely overwhelmed by all the available information on the market… so they end up not taking any action at all.

It’s a common affliction – but it doesn’t have to happen to you. Avoid spinning your wheels by following these four keys to starting a business…

1. Choose One Business Model – And Lay Your Foundations
One of the first decisions you need to make is which business model you’ll use to pave your path to success. These include models such as affiliate marketing, network marketing, direct sales, making and selling your own information products, and similar models.

So, which one should you choose?

Truthfully, it doesn’t matter. If you’re selecting from a list of proven business models like those listed above (and not some unproven “fad”), then any of them will make money for you. The key to making it work for you is learning real business skills and building up with the right foundations.

For the majority of my personal students I highly recommend getting started with affiliate marketing or direct sales because time and time again has proven to be the fastest way to start getting momentum and generating income. You also don’t have to worry about things such as product creation, technical features, customer support or getting merchant accounts etc.

Point is, once you have actually chosen your strategy – stick with it and make some money! You can very quickly start to add other models/income streams once you start to see results. This is something you will learn as a member of The Six Figure Mentors!

2. Select One Training Course

Just as there are many models to choose from, there are also many gurus and training courses that can teach you about making it online. It is my advice that to start with, you just stick with one course. I can tell you now that as a member of The SFM we provide you with EVERYTHING you require to  build a profitable online business. If you start following 10 different courses you will without a doubt get extremely overwhelmed, frustrated and disheartened very quickly. Trust me, I have been there and it wasn’t till I stuck to one idea and followed through that I got ANY results!

Tip: Yes: Later on, you can purchase additional materials to take your business to the next level. But for now, stick with one course. It’s much better to digest and apply ONE course of action than to get yourself in the middle of “information overload” and get nothing done.

3. Take Action
Now you have a model and you have the training you need to use this model to make money. Your next step is to take action on what you just learned. You might feel overwhelmed when you consider all the work you need to do.

Here’s a tip: Stop thinking of it as a big project, and instead break it down into easily manageable steps. So instead of thinking, “I need to build a website,” instead break this task down into little steps such as choosing a domain name, buying hosting, installing a WordPress blog… and so on.

4. Stick With It Until You See Results
One of the reasons many people fail is because they don’t stick with their model or training long enough to see results. They see something else bright and shiny, and they abruptly move in a new direction.

Example: The person might set up a blog, make a dozen posts and then write ten articles to promote the blog. But before the blog makes even one sale, the marketer decides to drop the blog and try Forex trading instead.

End result: They chase every new idea and never make a dime from any of them.

You can avoid this simply by committing to stick with ONE thing until you see results.

Example: If you decide to become an affiliate marketer, then follow your training guide’s instructions exactly, and stick with it until you see results. No matter how alluring other models or new products on the market are to you, just keep your eye on your goal.

Tip: Set mini milestones and goals for yourself, such as completing a module or finishing some content for a webpage.

Are you making $1000 + a sale in your business yet?

I see it happening all the time. The new online marketer gets excited about the potential of making it big online. They read a few ebooks, pick up a couple of courses, and get trying to make some affiliate sales or sell their own little product idea.

And for their first product, they create a $6 ebook…or maybe they go way out and decide to be an affiliate for a product that pays out $30. Their concept is that with such a low price, it should be easy to sell.

Sure, you may sell more at this low of a price, but what’s your overall strategy? How do you upsell them to a higher ticket item? What are the other products you make available to them?

Here’s a rule you must always remember…

Good marketing will not overcome bad maths!

You have to sell 100 copies of that $6 product to just make $600. If you want to earn at least $5,000 this month, you have to sell 833 copies…and that’s counting you as having zero advertising expenses. That’s a tough road to follow. Averaging 28 sales a day without advertising just to earn an OK income is not an easy to plan. And it’s never one I’d want to follow because frankly….. It won’t work!

Do the maths! Let’s say you plan to earn a million dollars. Sell 100,000 items at $10…or 1,000 items at $1,000.

Please note that high ticket could also mean $5,000, $10,000, $20,000 or more. These higher ticket items greatly reduce the number of customers you need to reach your goal.

What if you sell 10 of your $10 product this week, you make $100. On that $1,000 product, you made $10,000. Can you live on $100? Not likely. Can you live on $10,000 a week? I surely hope so, or we need to take a serious look at your lifestyle :-)

How about taking care of the customers? A surprising fact I’ve found is often the higher ticket customers are less demanding. In fact I’d say nearly ALL the time! With a higher ticket item, you obviously need a lot less customers…which means less customer service on it’s own…and less staff. So less expenses in selling those higher ticket items.

You do the same marketing work for more profits. You have to create a sales letter, autoresponder messages, JV letters, etc. for either product. The sales letter for the higher ticket item might be a little more detailed and there maybe a slightly different approach, but those same details can find their way into your email messages, videos, webinars, etc. You make more money from the same work when you sell higher ticket products.

In 2009 as a pretty new marketer I actually made $207,225.53 in income, selling someone else’s high ticket product and it took me just a few hours a month to manage that income stream. In fact I actually did over 3 times that amount but most of the commissions came in via bank transfer!

(average order of $1,684!)

So what’s the purpose of a low cost product?

It’s a lead generator for your high ticket items and to help build a stronger relationship with your customers. For example I sell one of my products for just $19.95 that I could easily sell for $497 +. But I choose to sell it for next to nothing in order to gain MASSIVE trust with my customers so they magnetically will want to buy anything else that I offer them in the future knowing from there first experience it will help them!

Also if you’re selling another product first, you can move into additional marketing such as direct mail or phone to sell the higher ticket item.

So the only question left is how do you develop higher ticket products?

One key of course is by adding additional value. The real secret is always increase your value until you’re giving way more value than what you’re asking for in price.

But the absolute quickest way to start selling high ticket products is as an affiliate. If you can find a high quality high converting offers and just send targeted traffic to those offers -you can literally sit back and collect the cash! I have sold millions of dollars of products doing exactly this!

Another key is to change who you’re marketing to. Pick markets where your customer have money…seek to sell to the affluent instead of those barely getting by.

An example of this in my business is that I stopped marketing to the usual internet marketing crowd. You know the ones who all connect on Facebook talking about the next IM launch or clickbank product. And I started focusing on targeting serious entrepreneurs. People who read similar books to me, who followed REAL gurus like Robert Kiyosaki, Richard Branson  Tony Robbins etc. I found targeting people this way made a lot more sense than targeting the ‘Get Rich Quick’ crowd that you typically see in the internet marketing industry.

Another great way to get confident about their being people out there who actually are prepared to spend a bit of money is through picking up a couple of magazines such as MONEY Magazine. For me, this was difficult at first since I came from the place of being pretty skint all the time and in debt. So it was hard to wrap my mind around the fact that there were a lot of niches where people had money…where they bought £3,000 golf clubs and attended £10,000 marketing conferences.

Yet, that’s one of the biggest changes you can make…a change in your mindset. In most businesses, people are willing to spend money to get what they want. And these are some of the best customers you can ever have…if you focus on them and deliver exactly what they’re looking for.

Do you have a morning ritual?

Today I thought I’d share a post about having a morning ritual. I have been inspired to write this post after a conversation I had with one of my coaching students Richard.

Richard recently went full time as an online marketer and like many (I know I did) he has been struggling to be really productive. Having gone from building his business in the evenings after work – to all of a sudden having all day to work on his business, he found he was very scattered in his approach and in fact, achieving less than when he was working part time! It may sound crazy, but it didn’t to me, because I have been there myself! :-/

What I found is that as a marketer, with the ability to work as and when I wanted, from where ever I wanted and with automated income, it was very easy to have a lack of structure to my day…

Always being tempted to put things off to later… because I could!

The problem being is that when that structure suddenly goes after quitting the day job, it can be very easy to fall into a bit of a lazy rut! Like I said, I know as I have been there!

So anyway, about 18 months ago after deciding to work on a new business (The SFM) I knew for me to be able to find the time (without going back to 11 hour days) I would need to seriously focus on my productivity. So I invested in a productivity coach…

Simply put, making that decision is one of the best things I ever did! I went from days with very little structure, to days where I was getting more done in a few hours, than what I was getting previously in a whole day!

I found that my energy was far higher and my attitude to getting work done improved ten-fold. Oh, and I even get out of bet at 7am now – rather than 11am lol!

If you have followed me for some time, you’ll know that at the beginning of the year I shared some videos to help you with getting more productive… And they went down like a treat – the feedback I got even surprised me as I thought at the time – it was just me that needed help :-) – but that was far from the case!

So this leads me onto my tips. One of the first things I worked on in my day was my morning rituals. Starting the day on the right foot with the right frame of mind sets you right up for a productive and profit pulling day!

I found that with almost all of my students they often, like I did start the day with nothing but either unorganized chaos. Or just sheer laziness. Very few people create any form of routine.

I have also found that this is even more important for people with kids… So don’t let that be an excuse NOT to have one!!!

Anyway, I thought I would share with you my personal rituals as you may get some ideas from them. Remember, after creating this consistent plan to start my day, my productivity went through the roof and so will yours!

  1. Wake up 7am. I don’t hit the snooze button. I jump out of bed as if someone threw a bucket of cold water on me. Remember, half of your day’s success is actually showing up and being excited. Rest time is over, get out of bed now!
  2. I down a pint of water first thing before anything else. (If you don’t like water on its own, squeeze some fresh lime into it) Water is great for you – you know that! And I find I am soooo much more alert after it. So don’t start with coffee!!!
  3. I brush my teeth and tongue. I lose the morning breath and use a strong mouth wash :-) Start off on a minty note! Particularly if you suffer from halitosis lol
  4. I eat my porridge and have my one coffee of the day! For me, I like to get out the house for breakfast. So off I go to starbucks for this one, and it ties in nicely with my next part of the morning! In fact I am writing this in starbucks now!!
  5. Go out and take in the sunlight. I wake up when I see sunlight. Its energy, invigoration and to be honest pretty amazing if you actually take the time to enjoy it! Get out and spend a few minutes outside looking up in the sky taking in the morning light. Wrap up warm if it’s cold (no excuses), but make sure you do it. I actually cycle with my dogs for an hour…And I love it!
  6. I spend time in silence. Don’t jump to put on the TV, news or radio. Be grateful for what you have. Mentally or on paper, plan the day out (I often do this at breakfast). Write out your to-do list and focus on money getting activities!!!.
  7. I Drink green tea. I now, instead of drinking more coffee, have a cup of green tea. It boosts my energy, provides antioxidants and has been promoted as a great natural healthy option. Try to avoid the caffeine fix from regular tea and coffee! Trust me it soon wears off!
  8. I write a journal. A list of rituals without journaling in the morning isn’t complete. I find it the most exhilarating thing to be sitting down for a short period and just writing out whatever comes to my head, no matter whether it immediately makes sense to me or not. I use an app on my iphone too called teux deux. That way if I have no paper I have no excuse not to jot things down!
